Naya Barsha — the Nepali New Year — falls in mid-April each year, and 2026 marks the beginning of Bikram Sambat year 2083. This year, communities from London to Edinburgh are pulling out all the stops for what promises to be the biggest UK Nepali New Year yet.
Why Nepali New Year Matters
Unlike the Gregorian New Year on 1st January, Naya Barsha falls on the first day of the month of Baishakh in the Bikram Sambat calendar. It is one of the most important celebrations in Nepali culture — a time for family, new beginnings, wearing new clothes, and sharing food with loved ones.
London
The capital will host the largest celebrations, with events spread across multiple venues throughout April. The Nepali diaspora in Hammersmith, Harrow, and East London will be particularly active. Expect community halls booked for cultural programmes, traditional music and dance performances, and restaurants running special New Year menus.
Aldershot & Farnborough
Home to one of the largest Gurkha communities in the UK, Aldershot's celebrations are always particularly vibrant. Expect traditional military band performances alongside civilian cultural events, a real mix of Nepali heritage and British culture that you won't find anywhere else.
Birmingham
Birmingham's growing Nepali community has organised a city-centre celebration this year featuring live cultural performances, authentic food stalls, children's activities, and a special prayer ceremony at dawn.
Manchester & Leeds
Both northern cities have rapidly growing Nepali populations and have begun hosting their own independent New Year events, making it easier than ever to celebrate wherever you are in England.
How to Find Events Near You
Check the Events section of the Nepalese Business Directory to find Nepali New Year celebrations near you. You can also submit your own event if your community group is organising something.
Naya Barsha ko Shubhakamana! Happy New Year to all!
