How do I register a business in the UK as a Nepali citizen?

I recently moved to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa and I want to start a small Nepali restaurant. Can anyone advise on the steps to register a business? Do I need any special permissions given my visa type?

I've heard I need to register with Companies House and also HMRC. Is there anything specific for the food industry?

Great question! First, check your visa conditions — most Skilled Worker visas allow self-employment or directorship of your own company, but verify this with your visa letter or on the UKVI website.

To register a limited company (recommended for a restaurant), go to Companies House (gov.uk/register-a-company) — it takes about 24 hours and costs £12 online. You'll then need to register with HMRC for Corporation Tax within 3 months of starting to trade.

For a restaurant specifically, you also need to: register your food business with your local council (free, at least 28 days before opening), get a food hygiene rating, and check if your premises needs a premises licence for alcohol.

The Nepalese Business Directory has a good list of Nepali-speaking accountants and solicitors who can guide you through the whole process. Worth the investment!

Adding to the excellent answer above — don't forget about food hygiene training for yourself and your staff. You'll need at least a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate, which you can do online for around £20-30.

Also, get public liability insurance before you open. A good broker can sort this out for you quickly. Many Nepali restaurant owners I know use local brokers who understand the specific risks of the hospitality industry.

Best of luck with your restaurant! The Nepali food scene in the UK is growing fast.

One more thing — if you plan to have any employees, you'll need to set up PAYE with HMRC and enrol in the workplace pension scheme (auto-enrolment) if staff earn over the threshold. This sounds complicated but most payroll software handles it automatically.

Also worth looking at the Princes' Trust Enterprise Programme if you're under 30 — they offer free mentoring and sometimes grants for new business owners.
