How do you celebrate Nepali New Year in the UK? Looking for ideas!

This will be our first Naya Barsha in the UK and I want to make it special for the whole family, especially our children who were born here and haven't experienced a proper Nepali New Year celebration.

What traditions do people keep here? What do you cook? What should we do?

Naya Barsha ko Shubhakamana in advance! Here's how we do it in our family:

Morning: Start with a puja at home if you have a small puja ghar or altar. Even a simple one with a diya (oil lamp), flower petals, and a brief prayer is meaningful. Wear your best (often new) clothes.

Food: We always make a special dal bhat with at least five vegetables, plus samay baji if we can get the ingredients. Sel roti is a must — you can make the batter the night before. Many families make a whole Nepali feast.

Afternoon: If there's a community event near you (check the NBD Events section!), go — it's wonderful for children to experience the community aspect. In London and Aldershot there are usually official celebrations.

Family time: We call family in Nepal at the start of Baishakh (usually around 5:30am Nepal time). The children love speaking to their daju-bahinis and grandparents.

For children: Make sel roti together — kids love shaping the rings. Teach them a simple Nepali prayer or song. Show them photos of Nepal. Make it an adventure!

Lovely question. We've found that the children born here actually become the most enthusiastic about these traditions because it's something unique and special to them.

One thing we started doing: a small Nepali New Year "scrapbook" with the children each year — photos, a drawing, notes about what they learned about Nepal. Looking back at these years later is incredibly precious.

Also: the Nepalese community is very welcoming to anyone who wants to join celebrations. If you're in an area without a big Nepali community, you might be surprised — reach out through the NBD community section and you'll find people.
