Naya Barsha ko Shubhakamana in advance! Here's how we do it in our family:
Morning:
Start with a puja at home if you have a small puja ghar or altar. Even a simple one with a diya (oil lamp), flower petals, and a brief prayer is meaningful. Wear your best (often new) clothes.
Food:
We always make a special dal bhat with at least five vegetables, plus samay baji if we can get the ingredients. Sel roti is a must — you can make the batter the night before. Many families make a whole Nepali feast.
Afternoon:
If there's a community event near you (check the NBD Events section!), go — it's wonderful for children to experience the community aspect. In London and Aldershot there are usually official celebrations.
Family time:
We call family in Nepal at the start of Baishakh (usually around 5:30am Nepal time). The children love speaking to their daju-bahinis and grandparents.
For children:
Make sel roti together — kids love shaping the rings. Teach them a simple Nepali prayer or song. Show them photos of Nepal. Make it an adventure!
